14 more remanded, three remands extended


The Petaling Jaya magistrate’s court today issued remand orders against 14 more individuals to assist with investigations into the riot incidents at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya last week.

Magistrate Mohd Ikhwan Mohd Nasir issued the remand orders for one to four days against the suspects, aged 18 to 40.

They were detained to facilitate the investigations under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, Section 148 of the same law for rioting, Section 427 of the same law for committing mischief and Section 447 of the same law for criminal trespass.

Meanwhile, Mohd Ikhwan also extended the remand orders for one to six days against three suspects to assist in the investigation of the same case.

Yesterday, four men, including a security guard of the developer, One City Development Sdn Bhd claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here to rioting and using dangerous weapons during the fracas.

Meanwhile, two men who were involved in the riot incidents – a mechanic, 29, was sentenced to two months’ in jail for failing to comply with police’s directive to disperse on Wednesday, two days after the riots, while a technician, 19, was fined RM4,800 on two counts of ignoring police personnel in charge of traffic control and failing to produce an identification card.

Earlier, inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun was reported to have said that the number of those detained over the rioting incident had risen to 99 as of 9am today.
