SHAH ALAM: Vietnamese Doan Thi Huong was introduced to a man who wanted to hire her for a “prank show” at a bar in Hanoi, the High Court heard.
In a statutory declaration, Doan’s friend Nguyen Bich Thuy said she had introduced Doan to a man of Korean and Vietnamese descent known as Mr Li at Hay Bar on Dec 27, 2016.
The declaration was read by Doan’s lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik in court on Wednesday (March 14).
“I cannot come to Malaysia to become Doan’s witness as I need to help my husband manage Hay Bar, which is open for business every day. It is our only source of income,” said the mother of one in her statement.
Nguyen said she and Doan knew each other from the time both worked as waitresses at Seventeen Bar from 2014 to 2016.
“She told me that she used to be an actress in a short scene in a crime drama,” Nguyen said.
After hearing that Li was looking for actresses for his short films, she thought of Doan and called her to come to Hay Bar for an introduction.
Ngyuen said that she overheard that Doan would be involved in short films shot at airports, adding that Li told Doan the short films at the airport are like videos of pranks on the street.
“For example, Doan would dress nicely, pass by another person and pour a cup of liquid on his or her head. She did not need to be skilful but she had to go to some countries such as Laos, Thailand, Korea and Malaysia,” she said.
Ngyuen said that Li would arrange for Doan’s visa and that Doan would have the chance to travel free of charge and receive a monthly salary.
“After Doan left, I asked Li how she was and whether he would hire her to work for him. He said it was highly likely he would choose her,” Nguyen said.
On Feb 21, last year, Nguyen said she came across an article online and saw Doan’s image with the line “Suspect in the Assassination Case at Malaysian Airport”.
“I realised that Doan might have been used by Li to assassinate a person in Malaysia because the details of the case were pretty similar to what Li required her to do,” she said.
Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 26, and Doan, 29, are jointly charged with four men still at large with killing 45-year-old Kim Chol on Feb 13, 2017.
Kim Chol is the alias used by Kim Jong-nam, who is the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, whenever he travelled.
The hearing continues before Justice Azmi Ariffin on Thursday (March 15).
