PETALING JAYA: Former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has lauded the decision by Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi to step aside as Umno president, calling it a “noble act” that puts the party’s interests first.
As a democratically-elected president by the party, said Najib, Zahid’s act was a big personal sacrifice and not an easy move to make.
The ex-prime minister also expressed his confidence in Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, popularly known as Tok Mat, who has been entrusted with the tasks of party president.
“He has the vision, leadership qualities and the trust of the party leadership and members to stabilise and rebuild Umno,” said Najib of the former Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar in a statement on his official Facebook page on Wednesday (Dec 19).
In appreciation of their trust in him, Najib also thanked “many leaders and Umno members” who had asked him to return to lead Umno, but said that he no intention or desire to be party chairman.
“As I have explained before, my current priority is to clear my name of the charges I am facing, continuing to voice out the interests of the people, focus on the rakyat’s problems and provide explanations on issues that affect the rakyat and the country,” he said.
Nevertheless, said Najib, he is always ready to help and fully support Tok Mat and the Umno leadership, if they have any requests or needs.
