To Americans and fans of American football, the Super Bowl is a big deal. For the rest of us, however, the final, championship game of the NFL season is usually more notable for the halftime performance, commercials and TV spots that play during the live broadcast, many of which are trailers for some of the biggest upcoming blockbusters.
This year’s Super Bowl (which, in case you were wondering, the Philadelphia Eagles won, beating the New England Patriots 41-33) was no exception, with teasers for Avengers: Infinity War, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Solo: A Star Wars Story among the TV spots.
Here are some of the more notable film-related ones:
Avengers: Infinity War
Chances are you’ve already seen the full-length trailer that hit last November, but this 30-second spot gives us more new footage, including clips of Thor hanging with the Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America showing off his new shields (yes, SHIELDS), and Tony Stark activating his Bleeding Edge armour, which comprises of nanotech that envelops his body!
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Everyone’s favourite stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder takes centrestage in this prequel to the Star Wars movies. From this 30-second ‘teaser to the trailer’, we get our first glimpse of Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. The film also stars Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Paul Bettany and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. And the Millenium Falcon makes an appearance too of course.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
“Do you remember the first time you saw a dinosaur?” We certainly do, so we can’t wait to see more of them. The trailer starts off on a chilling note, with a Velociraptor entering a child’s bedroom. After the Jurassic World’s cheesy but entertaining hark back to the old Jurassic Park, this one looks more like an action packed film with lots of horror elements.
Mission: Impossible Fallout
Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to watch Tom Cruise back in action as Ethan Hawke and doing his own stunts in what looks like one of the most action-packed and bruising instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise yet. That ultra-violent fight in the bathroom itself looks well worth the ticket price.
The Cloverfield Paradox
A Netflix feature film, this one isn’t exactly hitting cinemas, but it’s probably going to worth the watch anyway, especially if you’d seen the original Cloverfield 10 years ago. Back then, a mysterious monster attacked New York City. With this new film, we’ll find out why. Fun fact: did you know this is the third movie set in the Cloverfield universe, and that a fourth movie, Overlord, will be released in October this year?
The Rock meets Die Hard! Having seen him in mostly comedic roles lately, it’ll be a real pleasure to see Dwayne Johnson back in a pure action role. The fact that his character sports a prosthetic leg in this one makes it even more interesting.
A Quiet Place
Emily Blunt stars in this sci-fi horror flick which sees mysterious forces that are attracted to sound terrorising the planet. To survive, a family takes refuge in an abandoned farm while trying as hard as possible not to make a single sound. Expect a lot of disconcerting silent moments and sudden scares.
